A few of my neighbors had a great idea this summer for the neighborhood children. When they were little their moms organized the same kind of groups for them. Rather than paying a bundle for different camps for the kids- we decided to put anyone who wanted to participate into age groups and then subdivided smaller if needed to. Each mom only had to take one turn.
Tyson’s age group ended up joining with a service group that was organized which had apx. 16 kids in it. They have made pillow cases, fleece blankets, travel kits, and collected food for the food bank. What a great opportunity for him. He hasn’t been so keen on the idea, but has gone and learned from it.
Alyssa’s age group has made taffy,clay sculptures, stained plastic window hangers, ragged flip-flops, homemade ice cream, art work, and our last class that we hosted which included clip boards with attached pom pom tasseled pens, and yummy snow cones. The beauty of this first grade age was that they are still young enough that not a lot of preparation needed to be done.
I’ve heard the 4th grade girls group was turned into a book club group where then they came together and celebrated the things they learned in the books they read. One of the books I know was Little House in the Big Woods where then they made taffy, cornhusk dolls, and cross stitched. Cute huh!
The 2nd grade boys had a pirate party along with a treasure hunt and I think made swords for one of their days.
