FRIGHT N DELIGHTS FINALE'

Today we enjoyed the last of our frightful food fest.

Thanks to Taste of Home Magazine, For our desert we had

Ooey Gooey  Purple People Eaters, and

Spikey Martian Monsters on the loose!

Looks like with those tongues they were out to give us a taste.

Yummy Mummies were the perfect horror d oeuvre

to wrap up our fun for the month.

Tyson came right home and asked to add black spots and an extra tongue on one of his.  The mummies turned out darling.  We used grated cheese, but strips of string cheese could be substituted for a more bandaged look.

SKULL CANDY

SuNdAy MoRniNg At tHe AlLeN’s

Alyssa’s Mommy and Daddy were so tired this morning.  Alyssa wanted something to do in our room while we kept trying to snooze a little longer.  I was all over it.  I had a great idea to keep her occupied while I nuzzled my head under the covers Pointing her towards the other sleeping Mummy!

Tyson kept busy by taking my challenge to make breakfast for the family- French Toast.  I was pleasantly surprised when he took right to it.

WOW, I thought, sure wish I could suggest all my orders from the comforts of my warm snuggly covers.

Oh, that’s right, only in my dreams!

SPELLBOUND

Last week I took the kids to the Witches Breakfast at Gardner Village.  Yummy!  We had a good time.  The kids loved the witches and fun Halloween music in the background.

Tyson almost had his first kiss.  One of the wonderfully witchy witches was so funny.  She looked at him and he looked up at her.  She puckered her lips and he just kept staring and smiling.  She kept moving in closer, and so did he.  UNTIL  he realized what she was about to do….he turned his head SO fast!  It was pretty funny.

After breakfast we had some time to spend walking around seeing the fun decorations and shops.  The kids got a few little toy items in a grab bag, and I had fun with my camera.  Tyson got became annoyed and wanted me to put the camera down.  He made me promise.

I was quickly reminded of the promise I made to myself last year, that sometimes it is better to capture some memories in my heart and not through a lens.

Thanks for the reminder Tyson.  I love you!

HE’S BACK!

Bet some of ya didn’t even know he was gone…

At the end of the Summer, I was finally convinced.  Tyson was not our little Tyson anymore.  Something was different.  Where had he gone?  It didn’t hit me all at once, but over the course of the summer it had become apparent- and I had a sneaking suspicion of what it might be.

When school got out for the summer, Tyson wanted to enjoy days at home, watching TV on the couch or in front of the computer (pretty typical kid huh)  so a week or so went by- then we were out of town for a while, came home and again exhausted- he enjoyed more time enjoying lazy summer days.  Then back on the road for the 4th of July and to Oregon.

We knew he had thickened up over the past few months, just a few pounds, but we thought- finally!  He’s growing- good- football’s just around the corner, that 3 months of whole milk did him some good.  But it was more than that.

After we got his physical for football and notice he had only gained a quarter of an inch in 9 months- when most of the kids were gaining 1-3…It hit me…

I took him in to the Dr. and he had gone from the 70th to 50th to 20th to 12th to the 9th percentile in height over a 2 year span.  The Dr.  still said—we’ll watch him closely- but nothing seems wrong.  OK I said- but before I left, I asked if his Thyroid could possibly be off.  That was my sneaking suspicion.  Because I know ALL about that one.  Nah I thought in the back of my mind- but still needed to pursue it.

The Dr. said- no.  He would be very overweight and we would have seen a complete drop off in his height…stagnant.  OK I said.  Then, the Dr.  said- it couldn’t hurt to test it if you want.  I said  OK.

We left the office and I couldn’t help but to think… He HAS gained weight.  But on a normally very thin and fit kid- it just “thickened him up”  He was stocky.  Family noticed.   we noticed.  But chalked it up to the whole milk we had purposely fed him back in the spring.

Secondly I reflected the Dr.’s words of his height would be stagnant.  Well- it WAS.  Going from being 50th to 70th his whole life then dropping to the 9th with in a year…that is STAGNENT—

The final straw for me was that TYSON was NOT TYSON.  He was lackadaisical,  non goofy, non productive, nor interested in all things out door.  Even when he laughed it was from the inside out.  He has the most infectious laugh- and it was…gone.  He still smiled, but that sparkle, the one only those who know Tyson know, was gone.

So that night, I KNEW the diagnosis before the tests even came back.

When the Dr.  called the next morning.  early the next morning.  I knew.  His numbers were in the 400’s.  The normal range for Thyroid TSH is between roughly 0.2-5.5.  His number was in the upper 400’s!!!!

AND with that, we are blessed!  Tyson was blessed with the diagnosis.  Because the Dr.  said they would have never.  NEVER caught it.  He said he only treats 4 kids with Thyroid disorders, but wonders how many are out there, that have not been diagnosed.  “Someone was telling you to come in, Candy.  Someone.”

If we wouldn’t have caught this, he would have struggled over months of sluggishness, weight gain.  head aches.  Muscle aches (which he had all with in the months leading up to the dr. visit.) But I shrugged them off- I couldn’t put 2 and 2 together, even though I suffer from the same thing.

Although in late July and early August, I had my suspicions, I still tried to brush it aside.  The week before school started, Todd gave the kiddo’s a fathers blessing for the up coming school year.  As I listened to what he was being said during Tyson’s blessing, there was a sentence in which Todd eluded to  Tyson being able to accomplish and do all the things that normal kids his age do.  That struck me oddly, he’s always be able to to do things normal kids do, he’s a normal kid.  It hit me like a ton of bricks a few hrs later.  I hoped I knew what it was, and that it was not something worse.  That’s when the next morning I was able to act on my thoughts and call the Dr.  who had a cancelation appointment with in an hr of that.

We are blessed.  Blessed that the Lord is mindful.

So Tyson started his medicine, started football.  started school.  started smiling more.  laughing more.  infectiously laughing more.  picking on his sister more.  teasing his parents more.  being TYSON more!!!!

Still officially the shortest on the football field- but one of the toughest.  Tyson is once again, thriving!

One month of Thyroid medicine, and his number went from 467 to 2. something.  He also lost 7 lbs of his body between football and extra water weight…AMAZING!

AGAIN, we are SO blessed.

HE’s BACK!

TWO SWEET BLESSINGS

Our family enjoyed tending these two cute nieces/cousins for a few days last month.  Their Mom and Dad sent them baring yummy treats to share…how could we NOT be excited!  :0)They were full of life & energy… keeping us on our toes as we carted them to games, practices, pack meeting & all sorts of commitments our family had going on that week.  They were troopers.  We as well as our extended family have been so blessed to have them in our lives.  They bring a richness and understanding that we nor our kids would have with out them.

I purchased my first sewing machine this year.  It’s been a long time since the days of my first sewing classes when I made plaid pants, a sweatshirt and some pillowcases.  I’m enjoying the thought of all the new projects I can do, which of course include mending clothes that have holes or lost buttons.

FRIGHTS & DELIGHTS 1 & 2

October has been frightfully delightful this year!  I’ve met with a few friends the past 2 weeks to create creepy cupcakes and horror d oeuvres for our families on Mondays.  Not only has this given me fun time with my friends, but also my kids have LOVED it.  Tyson came home from school the other day and immediately picked out the fondant cakes he wanted.  Our family ended up having a draft pick for the cupcakes- they were hot ticket designs!

There are 4 of us- so it’s been easy to rotate, letting others be in charge of different weeks.  We end up each being in charge of 1 horror d oeuvre and 1 cupcake scheme.

One of my friends has tied her dinners in with our treats.  The first week she made Lasagna and Tomb Stone Bread Stix to go on top.  The next week she made Hot Dog Mummies wrapped in dough.

We have 2 more weeks of Frights and Delights.  Something to look forward to!

24 GRAND

A few weeks ago we were given the opportunity to stay overnight at the beautiful Grand America Hotel.  The kids loved being in such a nice and GRAND place.

When we got to our hotel room, as usual, Tyson proceeded to check out the digs.

“Mom, have you see the toilet?   It’s REALLY nice.”

After sitting down in a wing back chair…  “OH, WOW!  Mom, you didn’t tell me how soft this chair was.  I think it’s the best chair I’ve ever sat in.”

Later as we walked down the halls and through the foyer to the pool, Alyssa looks all around saying

“WOW Bea-u-tiful.

Tyson then once again responds, “This really IS a grand place.”

We enjoyed to the Nines for a day.

The pool.  The City Library (elevators) of course, and the roof top views after dark.  Training Table.  Texas Road House.  Applebees.  Clarke Planetarium.  The fountains.

AND we got to see GOLD medal Olympian Shawn White in the hotel.  He was in town for the X games DEW TOUR.  Pretty Cool.  Tyson’s been following the guy all winter.

Not a bad 24 hrs.

Heavenly Homes

This quote was sent through Daily Gems today.  SOUNDS so easy-

Parental Responsibility Includes Creating Heavenly Homes

"God, our Father, has entrusted precious little ones to our earthly care. To them may we teach prayer, inspire faith, live truth, and honor God. Then we shall have heavenly homes and forever families. For what higher gift could we wish? For what greater blessing could we pray? None!"

ANTICDOTE:

A young couple, Lisa and John, moved into a new neighborhood. One morning while they were eating breakfast, Lisa looked out the window and watched her next-door neighbor hanging out her wash.

“That laundry’s not clean!” Lisa exclaimed. “Our neighbor doesn’t know how to get clothes clean!”

John looked on but remained silent.

Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, Lisa would make the same comments.

A few weeks later Lisa was surprised to glance out her window and see a nice, clean wash hanging in her neighbor’s yard. She said to her husband, “Look, John—she’s finally learned how to wash correctly! I wonder how she did it.”

John replied, “Well, dear, I have the answer for you. You’ll be interested to know that I got up early this morning and washed our windows!
